Villain of the Week

“Villain of the Moment” may be a more appropriate project name. I always enjoy how the media portrays it’s villain of the moment. One week a media mogul, the next a politician who’s said the wrong thing at the wrong time, the next a dictator, all reported as the most evil and terrifying threat to our safety at that moment.
Through an ongoing series of portraits I hope to demonstrate the ridiculous targets and threats the media as a whole force into our minds as the person to hate. Some of these of course are truly nasty and terrible people, which is most likely where this project is starting, but once this moment in time has passed and another gut wrenchingly ‘evil’ person is held aloft as a sacrifice to fear itself, I hope this project will provide an avenue for some sober, and sensible comparison.
Make sense?

Amelia's Magazine

After a few weeks of prepping images, travelling around the country and not being able to actually finish anything, I woke up this morning determined to actually get something finished and posted today.
So I got my coffee, and breakfast and once I was at my computer turned on twitter for the days updates to see a tweet from Amelia Gregory, editor and creator the online publication Amelia’s Magazine, slide into view requesting an illustration. After sitting back and considering my workload for the day, I decided to satiate my need for finished artwork with something different and sent over my details.
Some 6 hours later we have the above illustration to accompany a review of popular music group Gazelle Twin. It’s been quite a while since having to complete an image in six hours, and the process was pretty fun.
Now, working for free is a tricky thing, but once in a while it’s nice to force myself into a short deadline and the timing on this was perfect to give me the exercise I needed. If your an illustrator looking for some quick visual exercise or some exposure make sure to follow @AmeliaGregory on twitter.

Laura Marling.

Here is a Laura Marling illustration. I’ve been listening to her a lot recently, and am looking foreword to a new album next month.
I was raised a folk-y I took my very first steps at a folk festival, so I’m kind of in my musical element at the moment with so many folk influenced bands popping up. See sometimes trends are cool.
Either way, there’s something very sincere about Marling’s music, not like she’s trying to play folk just like she’s telling stories, the way it should be done.
A modern success, guided by tradition.
Right last thing, get out your very best pair of headphones and whet your whistle with these two videos: http://bit.ly/qTp8CB http://bit.ly/nMhAbH
If you liked those then I’ve made a playlist for you: http://bit.ly/opIEJ2

A Goodbye & A Hello

Unfortunately,  this blog will no longer be my illustration blog.

I am switching to Tumblr for reasons that will become clear when you click on the BLOG section on my main site www.sector-4.co.uk and see it embedded. There's also a post detailing every reason I have ever had to switch extensively that goes on for pages and pages. So you have that to look foreword to as well.

I will keep this blog up and will keep up basic maintenance, such as posting new images, for those who do prefer to use blogger.

The new blog should (he says with fingers crossed) worth with RSS so you can keep up to date still.

Thanks blogger, it's been ace. If things don't work out with Tumblr and me I'll come crawling back.

So I looked at my calendar, and today is listed as "Andy and Stu's anniversary day."

I don't know why.

Stu (AKA: Boneface) and I lived together last year, we each have our respective partners so it's not a romanic thing, I think? It's not when we met, (september) it's not when we moved in together, it's there for no reason I can think of, other that Stu is ace.

So go check out Stu's work here: www.boneface.co.uk trust me you'll love it.

And check out this drawing I made to celebrate our anniversary day:

As part of a current project I produced this color texture test.

The line-work was quickly produced with a brush pen as a sketchbook doodle, this was taken and scanned to help me work on the colour technique for the main image.

I like it, what do you think?

Bonus question, does anyone know who this is?

Long time no post.

I've had some projects I have been unable to post about recently so apologies for the slow blog turnover.

There is however more exciting news in the pipelines, including posters, collaborations, exhibitions and more so do keep checking back.

Also make sure you are following me on twitter: HERE and Facebook: HERE for up to date news as well as sketches, doodles and day to day adventures.

Also make sure you are watching for updates on my main site www.sector-4.co.uk as things will be shifting around and new images may come and go, if theres anything you like, or don't like, drop me a line and let me know.

Now for some artwork, Here's a commissioned piece I drew up for a friend's T-shirt company. The fairly open brief led me to british folklore and I settled on a representation of a fairly abstract moment in the tale of Herne the Hunter.  It is my first attempt at narrative based work in a long time, I'd like to play with short narratives a bit more.

If you like it head over HERE and you can buy one, it has been produced in a limited edition run of 25. If you get one, why not send me a picture of you wearing it.

I have no problems admitting that I'm having some issues with personal work productivity at the moment.

It's something that happens to everyone I'm sure, I'm sure there are medicines I could get that would help...

OR, I have a new warm up drawing method to try everyday. It starts in a coffee shop once a week drawing people, as I often do, however my normal method focuses on faces, hands, shirts, detail. Taking a break from this I copied an animator friend of mine who's life drawing often focuses on posture, how weight is carried, and general form over detail etc. Once I got home I found that picking one of these immediate and scratchy drawings at random, enlarging it, redrawing and retracing it pulled a half remembered half invented character onto the paper.

essentially taking this: (click to EMBIGGNEN-ISE.)

Through being an old man, a young man, a grumpy man, a solitary & lonely man through to a character I felt was much more developed: (click to EMBIGGNEN-ISE.)

this was then scanned and completed quickly in Photoshop: (click to EMBIGGNEN-ISE.)

Not a bad warm up that works on drawing skill, characterisation, anatomy and colour work all in an hour or so in the morning. A good way to start a day, what do you do to warm up/keep yourself productive?

Maisonneuve Magazine in Canada used some of my work to accompany poems by Julie Bruck,

The main piece used was work I had previously created earlier this year, the birds were commissioned to tie everything together.

The magazine looks very nice, you should definitely pick up a copy if you see one.

I was also interviewed for their 'behind the canvas' section.

A preview of the poems and the piece used is viewable online HERE.

Some big news, I'm going to throw a few links at you now, be sure to check them out.

I am a bit slow on the blog posts, but last week I was unveiled as part of the Quenched Unsigned design team.

Check out there site linked above to find out more about Quenched and what they do in the music industry.

As part of the grand unveiling I have been interviewed HERE. A good chance to learn a bit about me.

My work is also featured in the gallery HERE.

Quenched Unsigned's art director is Ben Tallon, Ben holds the likes of E4, The Guardian and The Wall Street Journal among his clients and he's also a very nice guy.

Myself and Ben have collaborated on a poster design for an upcoming Quenched Unsigned night at Factory 251. I played typographer on this piece and enjoyed it. See below for the Poster.

Illustration by Ben Tallon, Text by Me.

I'm excited to be involved with quenched I think they are at the right place in the market to really set bands off on their careers.
